Backstage News On Plans For WWE SummerSlam Card

WWE SummerSlam is set to take place on August 5 from Ford Field in Detroit, MI. Pontiac, MI, just outside Detroit, was the backdrop for the legendary WWE WrestleMania III pay-per-view that saw Hulk Hogan bodyslam Andre The Giant jumpstarting a new era for pro wrestling. Decades later, it is time for the latest generation of sports entertainers to make big moments of their own.

While no matches have been announced, The Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting that Roman Reigns will defend his WWE Universal Championship against his cousin, Jey Uso, the man who pinned him at Money In The Bank. The match is hotly anticipated, and tonight’s Tribal Court segment on Smackdown is sure to take excitement to the next level.

Cody Rhodes and Brock Lesnar are expected to present the third bout in their trilogy, and it reportedly could go down with some kind of stipulation, possibly as a Bull Rope Match. Rhodes is coming off a somewhat easy victory over Dominik Mysterio in London, and a rested Lesnar attacked Rhodes on Raw, restarting the feud between the two men.

Drew McIntyre made his triumphant return to WWE at Money In The Bank in London, and, as someone who was there, I can tell you, the guy came across as an absolute rockstar. Unannounced, the Scottish star’s music hit, and he made his way to the ring to confront WWE Intercontinental Champion GUNTHER, who it looks like he will be squaring off against at SummerSlam.

Logan Paul and Ricochet had to improvise in the men’s Money In The Bank match when their Spanish Fly through tables spot did not go off as planned. Fortunately, the two men were able to execute the dangerous move and walked away unscathed. However, the same may not be said at SummerSlam when they will take more high risks in their first one-on-one match. WWE officials reportedly hope the match serves as a showcase for Paul’s athleticism, which is why he is paired with the high-flier.

Rhea Ripley will look to continue her dominance as she defends her WWE Women’s World Championship against WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion Raquel Rodriguez, while the former Women’s tag title holders, Ronda Rousey, and Shayna Baszler, settle their differences in a singles match. Rousey has reportedly given WWE a “hard out” date, and the match against Baszler could serve as her send-off from the promotion, for now, at least.

Bianca Belair will find herself back in the WWE Women’s Championship picture when she battles current title holder Asuka and Charlotte Flair in a triple-threat match. The women’s matches on the card will be rounded out by WWE Hall of Famer Trish Stratus battling Becky Lynch.
