Seth Rollins Blames Roman Reigns For WWE Needing Secondary World Title

Ever since winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Night of Champions earlier this year, Seth Rollins has had a target on his back. The Visionary has been taking fire from not just Raw competitors but NXT as well, where he recently picked up a victory over a fired-up Bron Breakker. At Money In The Bank, before a sold-out O2 arena in London, he picked up another victory over longtime nemesis, The Judgment Day’s Finn Balor.

Rollins defending his Championship as frequently as he does is a departure from how frequently WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns defends his. Prior to Rollins holding his own gold, Reigns monopolized the world title picture, holding both the Universal and WWE Championship at the same time, which made it difficult for the promotion to consistently churn out compelling main events seeing as The Tribal Chief has run through many of the company’s top stars already across his 1000+ day run.

In an interview with Ryan Satin for Out Of Character, Rollins opened up about being WWE World Heavyweight Champion, why he feels the title exists, and how he hopes to differentiate himself from Reigns.

“Here’s the thing, if Roman was doing what I’m doing, there wouldn’t really be a need for a secondary championship, there wouldn’t be a need for another World Heavyweight title on Raw, because we would have somebody that was doing those things,” he said. “It would kind of give direction to the characters on the show and give direction to the show itself. But because, you know, the route he has chosen, and what he wants to do with his schedule, and his title reign is not what I’m doing, somebody’s got to fill that void.

“And we did our best with the United States Championship for a little while to do that, but it never really felt like a World Heavyweight Championship, and, so, there’s got to be that person. There’s got to be that spot for everybody to get to, to try to fight for, and I’m very happy to, you know, be that carrot that’s dangling there. So, I think it’s a good thing, and, again, if Roman was doing all this stuff, and defending the title all over the place, then we wouldn’t have these problems.”
