Backstage WWE News On Matt Riddle Plans Before His Release

Matt Riddle was one of several notable WWE talents released last month following the company’s merger with UFC into the Endeavor-owned TKO Group Holdings. Riddle was let go from the company just weeks after an incident at JFK Airport where he accused a Port Authority police officer of sexual assault in a now-deleted Instagram post. Video footage of Riddle prior to the incident was released last week which showed the former WWE star acting in an obnoxious fashion whilst clearly intoxicated.

The former United States Champion made his final WWE appearance on the September 4th edition of WWE Raw where he and Drew McIntyre lost a tornado tag team match to Erik and Ivar of The Viking Raiders. Had Riddle stayed on with the company, it seems the alliance between himself and McIntyre would not have been a short-term fling according to a new post from WrestleVotes which detailed creative plans for the two prior to Riddle’s release.

“Prior to his departure from the company, I’m told there were significant plans for a Matt Riddle / Drew McIntyre tag team,” The X account posted earlier today. “So much so, various merchandise items were designed with the team name……. ‘McRiddle.’ This is not a joke.”

This would have marked the second tag team with a pun as its collective name that Riddle was part of during his time on the WWE main roster. The former UFC fighter is perhaps best known for being one-half of RK-Bro alongside Randy Orton throughout 2021 and 2022. The duo found success within the tag team division, winning the Raw Tag Team Championship twice during their 13-month run together – which ended abruptly when Orton was sidelined with a major back injury.
