Edge Returns On WWE SmackDown To Challenge Sheamus

Tonight on WWE SmackDown, Edge made his return in front of a raucous Canadian crowd. The “Rated R Superstar” called out Sheamus, citing the WWE star as the person who inspired him to get back in the ring. Edge challenged Sheamus to a match next week on SmackDown – a show already set to feature celebration of Edge’s 25th anniversary WWE, according to Fightful. Next week’s episode will take place in Edge’s hometown of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Edge told a story about mountain biking with Sheamus and, after taking a nasty fall downhill and standing back up, Edge looked at the camera and noted that people would wonder why he wasn’t able to wrestle. According to the WWE Hall of Famer, that was the spark that led to his wrestling return after years in retirement. Additionally, Edge got in touch with Sheamus before his 2020 return, and the two trained together to ensure Edge was ready.

In response to Edge’s challenge, Sheamus and the rest of the Brawling Brutes made their way down to the ring. After showing the footage of Edge’s fall, and Edge showing an embarrassing picture of Sheamus in return, “The Celtic Warrior” laid out why Edge is such an important figure in his life and career. At a pivotal moment early in Sheamus’ WWE career, Edge gave him some important advice while everyone else ignored him. Sheamus then agreed to a match against Edge in Toronto next week. However, before leaving the ring, Sheamus left Edge with an ominous warning.

“I just hope you didn’t make a mistake,” Sheamus said.

Since coming out of retirement in 2020, Edge has feuded against perennial friend/rival Randy Orton, faced Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan for the WWE Universal Championship at WWE WrestleMania 37, and started (and was promptly kicked out of) The Judgment Day. Prior to his return, Edge had spent nine years on the shelf after doctors advised him to retire due to cervical spinal stenosis. Edge has now teased retirement ahead, with only a brief amount of time left before he hangs up his boots for good.
