Drew McIntyre Set For WWE Raw Number One Contender Match

Tonight on WWE Raw, a new tag team sparked into existence when Drew McIntyre took Matt Riddle up on his offer of teaming together for a match. Following their victory over The Viking Raiders, McIntyre and Riddle were approached backstage by Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods of the New Day. Kingston and Woods challenged the new pair to a match on next week’s Raw, with Kingston stating that the winner would go to compete for the WWE World Tag Team Championships. Riddle, dubbing his team with McIntyre “The GlasBros,” accepted the challenge.

Kingston and Woods are coming off a recent return to the ring after months away, with Kingston suffering an ankle injury back in March. Last week on Raw, the two defeated Erik and Ivar, making tonight’s challenge even more appropriate.

McIntyre is similarly coming back from some time off, and for a time, there was doubt as to whether he would return to WWE at all. However, the Scottish Superstar came back in time for a WWE Intercontinental Championship match against GUNTHER at WWE SummerSlam, which he lost.

The WWE Raw and WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championships are currently held by Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. Both men are currently sidelined with injuries, and it’s not currently known how long they’ll remain out of action. Despite Zayn continuing to appear on WWE TV, Michael Cole noted on Raw commentary that Zayn is dealing with traumatic olecranon bursitis. Owens and Zayn last defended their championships against Damian Priest and Dominik Mysterio of The Judgment Day on the July 17 edition of WWE Raw.
